Cub Scout Fun Day
On Saturday, we went to a local community college, where the
council had set up the Fun Day. It was chilly and windy, but the
boys were so excited and kept busy enough that it didn't phase
them, of course!
The very first thing they wanted to do was the rope bridge. It was
harder than it looked to them--some of them went very slowly. But
they enjoyed it and would have gone back for more if there weren't
so many other things to do!
As soon as they crossed the rope bridge, they all wanted to play
with the barrel--either rolling it or riding in it, up and down
the slight "valley" that the rope bridge crossed. It was one of
those things that the mom in me knows is an accident waiting to
happen, but that the kid in me knows would be great fun!
Fortunately, none of ours did actually have an accident--they just
laughed and laughed as they rolled about.
After that, we wandered over to the Order of the Arrow tee-pee,
where there were older boys dressed as Native Americans. One was
playing a lovely-sounding wooden flute of some sort. Another was
leading a "spear"-throwing activity. The "spears" looked like
giant Q-tips!
The boys tried a few other games led by the "Natives" then we
headed over to the flour war. There, the boys divided into two
teams and threw flour-filled pieces of hosiery at each other. A
hit produced a satisfying puff of white, while not really hurting.
Here's a photo of the aftermath! LOL!
After our lunch break, we went over to the shooting ranges and
Thomas got to shoot a bb-gun and bow again. His improvement on the
bb-gun was incredible! From no hits even on the piece of paper
target three weeks ago to several hits on the points-assigned part
of the paper target this time! Woo Hoo! Over at the archery range,
Thomas again got two bullseyes--although, again, with considerable
help.

Fire Station Visit
We've had a busy time recently, with lots of Cub Scout activities.
I posted about our camp out here. Then last week we had a den
visit to a local fire station. Our firefighter/hosts were very
cordial and the kids got to see everything up close and personal!
Very cool!
I thought their new ambulance was so neat--when you opened both
doors, the ambulance immediately "squated down," so that the the
firefighters didn't have to lift so high when removing and
replacing the gurney! All the kids (our 4 Tigers, plus the
assorted sisters and a brother) got to sit in the ambulance.
They also all got to sit in the back seat of the firetruck. And to
peek into the individual little bedrooms. And to see the ambulance
rush out, lights and sirens on, at the very end, to a local
elementary where a child with asthma was having trouble breathing.

Self-Control is "Ludicrous"
Writing on the "Info for NZ Muslims website", Syrian-born Mr
Arwani called on Muslims to support Sheik Alhilali. "The argument
that men should control themselves is ludicrous. It is just like
saying thieves should not rob houses whose doors and windows are
left wide open," he said.
This is not a war between the Starbellies and the Plainbellies.
